Welcome

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. This year finds us still trying to get settled in our new school, and determining what our new mascot will be. I am excited to be taking on some new roles here while still helping to improve our post-high school support and helping prepare for graduation and what comes next for them.

I am teaching a variety of different classes this year:

  • AP Seminar--a new class at Franklin. This class will stretch us as all as learners! We are going to learn skills to help you become more critical and reflective thinkers. If you are a sophomore or junior, you will also have the opportunity to go onto the AP Research class in the next school year, where you will get to really focus some attention to a problem or topic you are interested in.
  • Essential Skills--Students who need to finish up their Reading and/or Writing Work Samples will be able to complete them in this class.
  • Introduction to Education--This class is for students who are interested in learning more about the educational field as a possible career choice. We will be studying some of the reasons why our school system is the way it is, such as the history of our educational system, some laws that impact schools, and some ethical and philosophical underpinnings of the current system. Then we will move on to learning a little about how students learn and develop as they age. Finally we are also going to be investigating different careers in education. Students in the class have the option of earning 3 credits at Portland Community College.
  • Educational Internship--This class allows students the opportunity to work with a teacher in their classroom to learn what it is really like to be a teacher as well as work directly with students on a daily basis either in a small group setting or individually. Students will also be completing assignments that reflect and build on their time in the classroom.
  • Academic Allies--Our Allies help our school function! They work with a teacher at Franklin and support their peers with assignments or experiences within the classroom. Students will be completing weekly assignments that reflect and build on their time in the classroom.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any concerns or questions at anytime. The best ways to get a hold of me is through email (ayork@pps.net) or the Remind App. I am rarely by the office phone.
